Vasco started surfing at the age of 6, with his Dad in São João do Estoril. He has since become a surfing sensation and one of the hottest young surfers in Europe. He is consistently takes down surfers a lot bigger and older than him in contests, but still keeps his feet well grounded. “My strongest and best influences all come for my family,” says Vasco, who is mature for his years.
Looking into the future, Vasco still has many years as a junior surfer but is already aiming well beyond that. He says, “I don't really think about the future at the moment, but my goal is to be part of the WCT elite one day.”
He's taking things one year at a time and is learning all the way. Vasco competed in the Quiksilver King Of The Groms World Finals in Hossegor 2009, alongside the best surfers aged 16 and under. He progressed to the quarterfinals only to be beaten by the eventual winner. “I love to be part of the Quiksilver team and I was really happy this year to get the wild card to compete in the KOTG final in Hossegor. To watch all the best surfers in the world surfing next to me was inspirational.”
The next big thing for this young man is the great opportunity to surf against the best in the World. This time not just against his peers, but also his hero's. Vasco has earned a Wildcard entry and a chance to surf in the biggest event to come to Portugal in years. If all goes well, Vasco could end up competing alongside his hero Dane Reynolds at this years ASP World Tour event at Supertubes. “At the moment I'm stoked to get the wild card to the WCT in Portugal, and hopefully make some heats and get to the main event.”
